Davaar
Toward, Dunoon
The existing dwelling faces east, overlooking the River Clyde and enjoying its own private beach, while access to the site is from the west. The approach leads to a discreet rear entrance that opens directly into the kitchen, which, along with other spaces in the property, does not meet the client’s requirements.
The proposal sees extensive internal remodelling and two equally proportioned side extensions to the north and south. A new centralised entrance is introduced, leading directly into the main hallway and offering a clear line of sight through the house to the garden and the sea beyond. This reinforces the strong axial symmetry, greatly improves the functionality and affords more of the home to take advantage of the stunning views over the Clyde.
The new garden room, replacing the existing garage, enhances the connection to the west garden area while its dark grey metal cladding matches the side extensions and serves as a contemporary contrast to the white roughcast stonework of the existing dwelling.
Originally designed during my time at a previous practice, the project has now been taken forward by Réalta from the building warrant stage onwards.
One Up
Hillside, Campbeltown
Situated on the site of a former farmstead on the outskirts of Campbeltown, the new build home features an open plan layout and double height living area with first floor mezzanine, offering panoramic views across the countryside from throughout the dwelling. A south facing veranda helps mitigate overheating of the expansive, glazed areas during the summer months, while still allowing the low winter sun to provide passive solar gain.
To the north, a carport provides a sheltered parking area and permits direct access to the house under cover. A detached garden room offers a flexible, multi-functional space that further enhances the enjoyment of the site.
Originally designed by a former colleague during my time at a previous practice, Réalta has been appointed to provide contract administration services as the project progresses on site.
